A Major Survey On Building Services ‘BIM READINESS’ – The Survey Findings
In August 2015 we highlighted that a sector-wide BIM survey had been launched by the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) alongside the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), engineering consultancy BSRIA, and Building, one of the UK’s leading construction sector publications. The BIM study ran until September 15.
The survey identified that the industry is way behind the government’s BIM timetable with fewer than one in six firms being “BIM ready”. The ECA disclosed, “The results indicate that while some companies have already engaged successfully with BIM, many more have yet to engage with the aspects that allow effective information sharing with others in their supply chain.”

Construction Enquirer went on to report that 54% of firms with a turnover of less than £1 are not ready at all and as a result, ECA concluded that, “Small contractors are facing a BIM ban from public jobs.”
ECA Director of Business Services Paul Reeve said, “The ECA has developed a four-point action plan to help building services firms prepare for BIM Level 2, and we will be working with our industry partners to drive this plan forward.”
