1. What is The Builder's Profile?

The Builder's Profile is an online service providing a greener, paperless way for companies to exchange common pre-qualification information - removing the need for paper pre-qualification questionnaires (PQQs) and all the associated inefficiencies, costs and waste. It is available for all main contractors and clients to collect and maintain data on their entire supply chain.

Uniquely, it is also available to subcontractors of any size to create a single Profile of their company that can be presented to any company that requires a PQQ.

2. How does a subcontractor get started?

As a subcontractor, you create a Builder's Profile account by clicking on subcontractor in the menu at the top of the screen. Once an account has been created, company information can be entered in the appropriate sections of the Profile. Premium Members have a single Premium Profile while Basic Members create separate Profiles for each main contractor to whom they wish to submit their details. Editing Profiles can be shared out amongst employees specialising in different areas. Once all the information has been entered, the Profile needs to be 'Submitted' to enable contractors or clients to view it.

3. Why should a subcontractor use Builder's Profile?

The Builder's Profile is the first genuine opportunity for subcontractors to reduce the number of pre-qualification questionnaires they are forced to complete.

Every subcontractor should assess their own operation ... if you work with just a handful of contractors, then wait until those contractors request a Profile and then submit a Basic Membership Builder's Profile to those specific contractors - once created, these can be easily amended as your company details change and you'll be automatically warned when critical information such as insurance details are due for renewal.

If you work with many contractors, then take the initiative - become a Premium Member, and submit your single Builder's Profile to all of them. There is no reason why any contractor should refuse to accept your Profile ... all your details can be easily viewed online, or exported in a suitable format for contractors to import into their own systems.

Common sense tells you that a company's basic details are the same for every PQQ - so only one company Profile should be required ... the Builder's Profile is the common sense solution.

4. How does a subcontractor send a Profile?

If a contractor is already using the Builder's Profile, Basic Profile members can 'send' their pre-qualification information simply by creating a Profile for the main contractor in question and 'submitting' it. Premium Profile members need to do nothing - their details are already available to all contractors using the service.

If the contractor is not currently using the Builder's Profile service, Premium Member subcontractors can send an email containing a 'link' that allows the contractor to immediately view their complete Profile with absolutely no setup requirements or costs. Contractors are simply invited to join the Builder's Profile and start using the service to maintain their entire supply chain.

5. How does a contractor use Builder's Profile?

Once a contractor creates a Builder's Profile Main Contractor Account, they can immediately see the 'headline details' (company names, addresses and trades) of every subcontractor who is using the service, and can use the online search to refine what they see. Once confirmed as a 'bona fidé' main contractor, they can access the full service functionality. From within their online account, they are able to request new Profiles, or 'latest update Profiles' at the click of a button; they can assess companies as 'approved'; and they can, of course, view all the details of companies who have submitted Profiles to them.

Every main contractor's list of subcontractors is unique ... you will be able to see the full Profiles of all Premium Member companies who have authorised you to see their details along with all Basic Member companies who have specifically submitted their Profile to you. In addition, you will be able to see 'headline' details of every other company who is using the Builder's Profile service - so you'll know that if you require their full Profile, you'll be able to get their details quickly and efficiently.

Builder's Profile also offers contractors a Supply Chain Cleaning service under which we take your supply chain list, remove duplicates and non-trading companies, and then contact each company requesting that they submit a Builder's Profile to you. 6. Why should a contractor accept a Profile from a subcontractor?

The Builder's Profile has been designed to answer all the common pre-qualification questions and to accommodate suppliers and subcontractors of any size. It saves contractors and clients time and money as information from all their subcontractors is available at the touch of a button and there is no need to manually input data from hundreds of paper PQQs. The Builder's Profile also provides a contractor with access to the most up to date information as it is notified when changes are made to a subcontractor's Profile. In addition, company Profiles can be delivered to contractors in whatever format they require in order to integrate with their current systems.

7. What should a subcontractor do when he receives a paper PQQ?

If a paper PQQ lands on a subcontractor's desk from a contractor that is not yet using the Builder's Profile, the subcontractor should resist filling it out. Instead, they should log on to the Builder's Profile and send an automated email to the contractor containing a link to their Profile. This will let the contractor know that all the subcontractor's details are available online and ready for immediate viewing.

8. What if a contractor doesn't accept Builder's Profile?

There is no guarantee that a subcontractor's Profile will be accepted every time; however, we, and our partner associations, are working with contractors and clients to encourage them to use the Builder's Profile service. If a contractor doesn't accept a Profile, please inform us and we will approach the contractor directly. There is no reason why a contractor should not accept the Builder's Profile.

We cannot change the entire industry overnight, but as more and more people use the Builder's Profile, contractors will find it increasingly difficult to justify a refusal to accept it.

9. How does Builder's Profile work with other pre-qualification schemes?

The Builder's Profile is NOT a pre-qualification scheme - it is a data collection and distribution scheme. It is not designed to compete with the commercial accreditation and verification systems such as Constructionline, Achilles and CHAS. Instead, it is designed to offer them a readily available source of information without the need for them to ask subcontractors to complete additional questionnaires. All the existing schemes have the opportunity to secure huge reductions in time and cost wastage for everyone by accepting the Builder's Profile as their base questionnaire.

The Builder's Profile uniquely separates the collection and distribution of information from the use of that information. It is a totally independent service aimed purely at removing the need to ask subcontractors the same questions over and over again. The Builder's Profile will be made available, assuming the subcontractor's approval, to any business or service having a genuine reason for requiring the information.

10. What does Builder's Profile cost?

Subcontractors can become Premium Members of the Builder's Profile for an annual rate of £275 + VAT. This allows them to complete and use a single Profile for all pre-qualification requests from any contractor or client.

Members of our partner trade associations - the Builders' Conference and the NSCC - are eligible for a discounted rate of just £199 + VAT per annum.

Members of other recognised trade associations who support the Builder's Profile are eligible for a discounted rate of £225 + VAT per annum.

There is also the Basic Membership which is a free version of the service enabling subcontractors to complete an individual Profile for each contractor or client with whom they wish to share their information. Under Basic Membership, each subcontractor has multiple Profiles - each one specifically published to a single contractor or client. Basic Membership is intended for those subcontractors who work only with a handful of main contractors.
